Environmental testers measure ambient conditions that affect comfort, safety, processes and product quality. Instruments may measure temperature, relative humidity, dew point, air velocity, differential pressure, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, airborne particles, illuminance or sound level. Handheld and multifunction models are used in HVAC commissioning, indoor-air-quality surveys, cleanrooms, laboratories, storage facilities, industrial hygiene and building maintenance.

Select an environmental tester by the exact measurand, required range, accuracy, resolution and response time. Confirm the sensing principle, probe location and whether the instrument meets the applicable sound, light, air-quality or cleanroom standard. For multifunction units, verify which probes are included and which require separate purchase, plus connector and firmware compatibility. Check data logging, memory, sampling interval, alarms, wireless export, operating environment and battery life. Replaceable sensor life, calibration method, certificates and field-adjustment capability are important for traceable results.
