About Crystals

Quartz crystals are passive resonators that provide a stable frequency reference when connected to a compatible oscillator circuit. They are used in microcontrollers, processors, communication equipment, wireless modules, industrial controls, automotive electronics, real-time clocks, and measurement systems. Unlike complete oscillators, crystals do not contain an active output stage and their operating frequency depends on the resonator mode, load network, and circuit design.

Select a crystal by nominal frequency, frequency tolerance, stability over temperature, load capacitance, equivalent series resistance (ESR), drive level, and operating-temperature range. Confirm whether the device is specified for parallel or series resonance and for fundamental or overtone operation. Also check shunt capacitance, motional parameters, aging rate, package, mounting style, and compatibility with the oscillator amplifier; excessive drive can accelerate aging or damage the resonator.
