About Capacitors
Capacitors store electrical charge and are used for decoupling, filtering, energy storage, timing, snubbing, signal coupling and transient suppression across electronic systems. The Antrex Capacitors category includes tantalum capacitors, aluminum electrolytic capacitors, capacitor networks and arrays, ceramic capacitors, electric double layer capacitors (EDLC) / supercapacitors, film capacitors and feed-through / pass-through capacitors. These technologies differ significantly in capacitance range, voltage capability, ESR, ripple-current handling, frequency behavior, lifetime and physical size, making capacitor type an important part of circuit design rather than a purely interchangeable package choice.
Choose the capacitor technology according to the electrical function and operating conditions first. Tantalum capacitors offer high capacitance density but require careful voltage derating and surge-current control. Aluminum electrolytics are commonly selected for bulk filtering and energy storage, so capacitance, rated voltage, ESR, ripple current, lifetime at temperature and mounting style are key. Ceramic capacitors require attention to dielectric class, DC-bias capacitance loss, temperature coefficient, voltage rating and package size, especially for MLCC power decoupling. Film capacitors are often chosen for low loss, pulse handling, AC applications and stable capacitance. EDLC / supercapacitors require verification of cell voltage, capacitance, ESR, leakage, balancing and cycle life. Capacitor arrays must match circuit configuration, common terminals, tolerance and pinout, while feed-through capacitors should be checked for current rating, insertion loss, cutoff behavior and mounting geometry. Across all capacitor families, also confirm tolerance, polarity where applicable, operating temperature, qualification, dimensions, termination and lifecycle status. Replacement parts should be matched by dielectric or construction technology, electrical stress, ripple/pulse requirements and mechanical fit rather than capacitance and voltage alone.
