Rotary and position encoders convert mechanical movement into electrical signals for position, direction, speed and user-input detection. They are used in industrial controls, motors, robotics, instrumentation, audio equipment, appliances and operator interfaces. Available products include incremental and absolute encoders, mechanical and optical types, magnetic sensing designs, panel-mount controls and devices with integrated push switches. Output options range from contact pulses to quadrature, analog and digital interfaces.

Select an encoder by confirming rotary or linear motion, incremental or absolute operation, pulses or positions per revolution and the required output format. Check supply voltage, output circuit, phase relationship, indexing signal, maximum rotational speed and switching or bearing life. Mechanical details include shaft style and diameter, detent count, mounting method, bushing thread, termination, dimensions and optional push-switch function. Also review operating torque, environmental sealing, temperature range and vibration resistance before choosing a replacement.
