Connectors provide removable or serviceable electrical interfaces between circuit boards, cables, modules and equipment. Start selection with the complete connector family and mating interface, then confirm position count, pitch, row count, contact gender, orientation and mounting style. For board connectors, verify PCB footprint, through-hole or surface-mount termination, stack height and board thickness; for cable systems, check wire gauge, crimp contact, insulation diameter, cable exit and required tooling. Electrical requirements include current and voltage rating, contact resistance, insulation resistance, impedance and data rate where high-speed signaling is involved. Mechanical and environmental factors include mating cycles, insertion/extraction force, latch or locking method, keying, polarization, sealing, IP rating, vibration, temperature and material/flammability requirements. For replacements, match the full connector series, mating half, keying, contact system and footprint rather than relying only on pin count or housing appearance, because visually similar connectors are often mechanically or electrically incompatible.
