About Circuit Protection

Circuit protection covers devices used to limit, interrupt, clamp or divert abnormal electrical energy before it damages equipment or creates a safety hazard. This category includes fuses and fuseholders, circuit breakers, inrush current limiters, PTC resettable fuses, surge suppression ICs, thermal cutoffs, transient voltage suppressors (TVS), varistors/MOVs, gas discharge tube arresters (GDT) and related protection components. These technologies address different fault mechanisms such as sustained overcurrent, startup surge, overheating, electrostatic discharge and high-energy transient events in power supplies, industrial controls, communications hardware, appliances, automotive electronics and other systems.

Choose the protection method according to the fault to be controlled rather than by package or current rating alone. For overcurrent protection, compare fuse or breaker current rating, voltage rating, interrupting capacity, trip curve and reset requirements. For inrush limiting, verify cold resistance, steady-state current and energy capability. For surge and transient protection, compare standoff or working voltage, breakdown or clamping voltage, pulse current, peak power and response behavior across TVS devices, MOVs, GDTs and surge suppression ICs. Thermal protection requires the correct functioning temperature and installation conditions, while PTC devices add resettable overcurrent behavior. Also review AC/DC application, fault energy, coordination with upstream protection, leakage, capacitance, package, mounting method, approvals and lifecycle status. The best device depends on the system topology, expected transient waveform and required safety standard, so products from different protection subcategories should not be treated as interchangeable.
